🌅Before the Puja
Physical Preparation
- Bathing: Take a fresh bath before the ceremony. This symbolizes purification of the body.
- Clean Clothes: Wear fresh, clean clothes—preferably traditional attire in white, yellow, or saffron colors.
- Fasting: Light fasting or eating sattvic (pure) food is recommended. Avoid onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food.
- Rest: Ensure adequate sleep the night before for mental clarity.
Mental Preparation
- Set Intentions: Clearly define your sankalpa (spiritual intention) for the Puja.
- Calm Mind: Practice a few minutes of meditation or deep breathing.
- Positive Thoughts: Release negative emotions and cultivate gratitude.
- Devotional Attitude: Approach with humility and sincere devotion.
Space Preparation
- Clean Area: Thoroughly clean the Puja space and surrounding area.
- Sacred Setup: Arrange your altar or Puja space facing East or North.
- Fresh Flowers: Place fresh flowers and remove wilted ones.
- Quiet Environment: Minimize distractions—turn off phones and TVs.
- Ventilation: Ensure good airflow for incense and lamp smoke.

Participation Guidelines
🙏 Physical Conduct
- Sit comfortably in a cross-legged position if possible
- Keep your spine straight and hands in prayer position
- Face the deity or altar throughout the ceremony
- Avoid crossing your legs toward the deity
🕉️ Mental Focus
- Maintain focused attention on the rituals
- Repeat mantras silently when the priest chants
- Visualize divine energy flowing to you
- Keep your sankalpa in mind throughout
Key Ritual Moments
- Sankalpa: When the priest asks for your intention, state it clearly with full conviction.
- Aarti: Participate actively by waving your hands over the flame and touching your eyes.
- Mantra Chanting: Follow along or listen with deep attention and reverence.
- Offerings: When making offerings, do so with your right hand or both hands.
- Pradakshina: If circumambulating, always move clockwise around the deity.
What to Avoid
- Do not point your feet toward the deity or altar
- Avoid talking or using phones during the ceremony
- Do not leave the ceremony midway unless absolutely necessary
- Avoid eating or drinking during the Puja (unless part of the ritual)
- Do not touch sacred items without the priest's guidance
🌸After the Puja
Receiving Blessings
- Prasadam: Accept and consume prasadam (blessed food) with reverence.
- Tirtha: Receive holy water by cupping your right hand and sipping it.
- Vibhuti/Kumkum: Apply sacred ash or vermillion as directed by the priest.
- Blessed Items: Keep any blessed items in a clean, respectful place.
Post-Puja Practices
- Gratitude: Express sincere thanks to the priest and the divine.
- Reflection: Spend a few quiet moments in meditation or prayer.
- Sharing: Share prasadam with family members and neighbors.
- Charity: Consider making a charitable donation (dakshina) as an offering.

Creating Sacred Space at Home
- Dedicated Area: Set up a small altar or clean space facing your screen
- Sacred Items: Place a small lamp (diya), incense, flowers, and water
- Deity Image: Keep an image or idol of the deity being worshipped
- Offerings: Prepare fruits, sweets, or other offerings as instructed
- Seating: Use a clean mat or cushion for comfortable sitting
🪔Common Puja Items (Samagri)
Essential Items
- 🪔 Diya (Lamp): Oil or ghee lamp with cotton wick
- 🕯️ Camphor: For aarti and purification
- 🌸 Flowers: Fresh flowers, preferably marigold or lotus
- 🍚 Rice (Akshata): Unbroken rice grains, often colored with turmeric
- 💧 Water: Clean water in a copper or brass vessel
- 🥥 Coconut: Whole coconut with husk

Ganesh Mantra (For Beginnings)

Salutations to Lord Ganesha, remover of obstacles. Chanted at the start of any Puja.
📚Guidelines by Puja Type
🌞 Satyanarayan Puja
- • Fast until the Puja is complete
- • Prepare panchamrit (five nectars)
- • Have banana leaves for prasadam
- • Listen to the Katha with full attention
🔱 Durga Puja
- • Wear red or yellow colored clothes
- • Offer red flowers and hibiscus
- • Prepare special bhog (food offering)
- • Participate in aarti with devotion
🐘 Ganesh Puja
- • Offer modak and ladoo sweets
- • Use durva grass in worship
- • Red flowers are especially auspicious
- • Chant Ganesh Atharvashirsha if known
💙 Vishnu/Krishna Puja
- • Offer tulsi leaves (sacred basil)
- • Yellow clothes and flowers preferred
- • Prepare butter and milk offerings
- • Chant Vishnu Sahasranama if possible
